Colligative properties
Dissolved particles lower the vapour pressure, raise the boiling point and lower the freezing point.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose the solvent and the solute.
- Move the “Mass of solute in 1 kg solvent” slider.
- Read molality, particles (i·m), and the boiling and freezing point changes.
- Look at the vapour-pressure graph to see why the boiling point rises.
What to notice
- It depends on the number of particles, not their identity.
- NaCl gives about twice the effect of glucose at the same molality (i ≈ 2).
Try this
Find the mass of NaCl that gives the same boiling-point rise as 180 g of glucose.
