Gas laws and kinetic theory
Real molecular dynamics: gas particles bounce in a box and the pressure is measured from wall hits.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose a gas and set temperature, volume (piston) and number of particles.
- Wait for “Measuring”, then read pressure, the ideal value and Z.
- Choose Boyle (P–V) or Gay-Lussac (P–T) and press “Record point” for several settings.
- Look at the speed histogram and the van der Waals curve in “Graphs”.
What to notice
- Nothing tells the box what the pressure should be — it emerges from collisions.
- Big particles at high packing give Z > 1, like real gases at high pressure.
Try this
Record 5 points at fixed T. Is P × V constant?
