Hybridisation transformer
Atomic s and p orbitals blend into hybrid orbitals that point along the bonds.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose a molecule, then switch the view to “Hybridisation”.
- Drag the “Atomic → hybrid orbitals” slider to morph the orbitals.
- Look for leftover (unhybridised) p orbitals — they make π bonds.
What to notice
- sp³ → tetrahedral, sp² → trigonal planar, sp → linear.
- Hybridisation is a model that links shape to bonding.
Try this
Look at ethyne (C₂H₂). How many unhybridised p orbitals does each carbon keep?
