Hydrogen bonding and intermolecular forces
Water molecules form and break hydrogen bonds all the time; H₂S cannot.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose H₂O and watch the blue dashes (hydrogen bonds) flicker.
- Raise the temperature slider: faster motion breaks more bonds.
- Switch to H₂S and compare.
- Open “Boiling points” to see the hydride graph.
What to notice
- A hydrogen bond needs H on N, O or F plus a lone pair on a neighbouring molecule.
- H₂O, HF and NH₃ boil far higher than the trend in their group predicts.
Try this
On the graph, how much higher does water boil than the group-16 trend line suggests?
