Ion-electron redox balancing
Balance redox equations by the ion-electron (half-reaction) method, in acid or base.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose the method “Ion-electron”.
- Enter only the species that change oxidation state, e.g. MnO4^- + Fe^2+ -> Mn^2+ + Fe^3+.
- Choose acidic or basic medium and press “Balance”.
- Follow each half-reaction and how they are combined.
What to notice
- Balance O with H₂O, H with H⁺ (or OH⁻ in base), then charge with electrons.
- Multiply the halves so the electrons cancel.
Try this
Balance dichromate with iron(II) in acid. How many electrons does each Cr gain?
