Mixture vs compound (Fe/S)
Iron filings and sulfur powder as a mixture, then as the compound iron(II) sulfide after heating.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Start at “Mix”: see the grey iron and yellow sulfur particles side by side.
- Choose “Magnet”: the iron is pulled out of the mixture.
- Choose “Heat”: iron and sulfur react to form FeS.
- Compare the two columns in the “Mixture vs compound” panel.
What to notice
- In a mixture each part keeps its own properties, so it can be separated physically.
- A compound is a new substance: the magnet no longer pulls it out.
Try this
Change the amounts of iron and sulfur so that nothing is left over after heating.
