Precipitation and Ksp
Mix two ionic solutions. A precipitate forms only when the ionic product Q exceeds Ksp.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose a sparingly soluble salt.
- Set the cation and anion concentrations after mixing.
- Watch for the precipitate and compare Q with Ksp.
- See the common-ion graph in the “Common ion” panel.
What to notice
- Q > Ksp → precipitate; Q < Ksp → clear solution.
- Adding a common ion makes the salt much less soluble.
