Separation techniques
Separate mixtures by extraction, distillation or TLC and see how well each works.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose a method: Extraction, Distillation or TLC.
- Extraction: change the partition coefficient K and the number of extractions.
- Distillation: choose a mixture and the number of theoretical plates.
- TLC: change the eluent polarity and read the Rf values.
What to notice
- Several small extractions beat one large one.
- More plates → purer distillate, until an azeotrope stops it.
- Polar spots cling to the plate and travel less.
Try this
Find the smallest number of plates that separates the mixture well.
