Tanabe–Sugano explorer
Fit a Tanabe–Sugano diagram to a real complex’s spectrum to find Δo and the Racah B.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Choose a complex.
- Move the Dq and Racah B sliders until the predicted bands match the observed ones.
- Or press “Fit B from ν₁ and ν₂”.
- Read the nephelauxetic ratio β.
What to notice
- For d³ and d⁸, ν₁ gives Δo directly.
- B is smaller in the complex than in the free ion (β < 1).
Try this
Which ligand, NH₃ or H₂O, gives the smaller β?
