Wave–particle duality
Electrons are fired one at a time at two slits. Dot by dot, an interference pattern builds up.
Open the interactive simulation →How to use this simulation
- Press play (or “Fire”) and watch single dots arrive on the screen.
- Wait for a few hundred electrons.
- Change the accelerating voltage and see the fringes move.
- Turn on “Which-slit detector” and watch the pattern disappear.
What to notice
- Each electron lands at one spot, like a particle — but the pattern is a wave pattern.
- Higher voltage → shorter wavelength → fringes closer together.
Try this
Why does watching which slit an electron uses destroy the fringes?
