Unit conversion

Units & Measurements

Changing a unit changes the numerical value, not the physical quantity. Convert through the common base unit. Area scales with the square of a length factor; volume scales with its cube. This laboratory includes exact prefix and time conversion factors, not temperature offsets.

Same quantity. A different unit.

Key notes, relationships and model limits

Key relationship

A length factor k becomes k² for area and k³ for volume: 1 cm² = 10⁻⁴ m²; 1 cm³ = 10⁻⁶ m³.

Remember

Convert through a common base unit and check that the quantity type stays the same.

Common trap

1 cm² is 10⁻⁴ m², not 10⁻² m².

Model limits

This converter uses multiplicative factors. Celsius–kelvin conversion also needs an offset.

What you will learn

Convert lengths, masses, times, areas and volumes; explain squared and cubed prefix factors.

Try the experiment

Choose a quantity type, two compatible units and a value. Watch both descriptions represent the same quantity.

Think of it this way

One rupee and one hundred paise describe the same amount. A different scale changes the number used to describe it.

Worked example

250 cm = 250 × 0.01 m = 2.5 m. Similarly, 1 cm³ = 10⁻⁶ m³ = 1 mL.

Why this matters

A unit error can be large: confusing centimetres with metres creates a factor of 100.

Decimals · fractions · powers of ten

Check your understanding

What is 1 cm² in m²?

Read the explanation

1 cm = 0.01 m, so 1 cm² = (0.01 m)² = 0.0001 m².
