Half and full-wave rectification

Semiconductor Electronics

A half-wave circuit passes one polarity. A bridge reverses the negative half-cycle through the load, producing same-polarity pulses at twice the input frequency. Rectified output is pulsating before filtering.

Half and full-wave rectification

அரைஅலைச் சுற்று ஒரு பாதி அலையை அனுப்பும். முழுஅலைப் பாலம் இரு பாதிகளையும் ஒரே திசைத் துடிப்புகளாக மாற்றும்.

Key notes, relationships and model limits

Key relationship

Half: max(0,A sinωt−Vd); bridge: max(0,|A sinωt|−2Vd).

Remember

A half-wave circuit passes one polarity. A bridge reverses the negative half-cycle through the load, producing same-polarity pulses at twice the input frequency. Rectified output is pulsating before filtering.

Common trap

Rectification alone does not provide a constant DC voltage.

Model limits

Resistive load, prescribed input sine, constant diode drops; source resistance and smoothing absent. A bridge current path contains two diodes.

What you will learn

Distinguish rectification from voltage smoothing.

Try the experiment

Try both scenarios, change one control, and predict the result before checking the graph and readouts.

Think of it this way

Change one input while keeping the others fixed, as you would in a controlled experiment.

Worked example

Ideal8 V peak gives mean8/π≈2.546 V half wave and16/π≈5.093 V full wave.

Why this matters

The model connects half and full-wave rectification with an observable reading. Check the equation and assumptions before applying it.

Before you start

SI units · algebra · graph reading

Check your understanding

A full-wave rectifier driven at50 Hz has output-pulse frequency?

Read the explanation

Both halves create a pulse, doubling frequency.
